Photography – Department J-20

  • To be judged Thursday, 10:00 a.m.
  1. All pictures must be made during the current year.
  2. All entries must be mounted on poster board, not smaller than 5”x7” nor larger than 14”x22”, depending upon picture size and number of pictures in exhibit. All pictures of one prize number on a single mounting.
  3. NO frames (wood or metal) no glass or acrylic will be accepted.
  4. NO foam board.
  5. Each poster must have a title, each picture a caption. All photos on poster must be the same size.
  6. STAPLE ENTRY TAG ON FRONT, RIGHT LOWER CORNER.
  7. Entries will be judged on basis of technical quality, composition and storytelling ability.
  8. Suggestion: pictures should be mounted using rubber cement.
  9. Exhibitors may enter in one class only.
  10. No dates should be printed on the photos.
  11. Pictures may be cropped.
  12. Lot 14, 23, and 32 have the option to be judged face-to-face from 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. on Thursday of the fair (entry MUST be checked in at the fair on Wednesday, entry day). To be considered face-to-face judging, the exhibitor must come to the photography judging area for judging between 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. The exhibitor must be present (no substitutes) and will talk with the judge about their entry.  The judge will determine the placing at that time.  If the exhibitor does not come on Thursday, 10:00 – 10:30 a.m., the rest of the entries in lot 13 will be judged Danish as a class.

Department J-20, Class A – Focus on Photography

Unit I – Open to exhibitors grades 3-5.

  1. Family gathering or group, 3 photos, colored
  2. Sequence of 3 pictures reporting any subject, colored.
  3. Animal photography, 3 photos, colored
  4. Traveling Wisconsin: 3 photos (places must be identified), colored.
  5. Winter photography: group of 3 photos, colored
  6. Unique or trick photo, 5×7, explanation on attached 3×5 card.
  7. A 5”x7” (or larger) enlargement.

Unit II – Open to exhibitors grades 6-8 exhibiting for their 1st or 2nd year in the photography project.

  1. Flowers, 3 photos, colored
  2. Sequence of 3 pictures reporting any subject, colored.
  3. Animal photography, 5 photos, colored
  4. Traveling Wisconsin: 3 photos (places must be identified), colored.
  5. Winter photography: group of 3 photos, colored
  6. A 5”x7” (or larger) enlargement.
  7. Unique or trick/optical illusion photo, 5×7, explanation on attached 3×5 card. (optional face-to-face judging – see rule 12)

Department J-20, Class B – Controlling the Image – Open to exhibitors grades 6-8, with more than 2 years in the photography project.

  1. Portrait Sitting, consisting of 3 different poses, colored or black and white.
  2. Panorama Picture
  3. Composed lifeless grouping of objects such as fruit (no buildings).
  4. Three action pictures, colored.
  5. Vacation: 3 photos (places must be identified), colored.
  6. Winter photography: group of 3 photos, colored.
  7. Animal photos, 3, colored.
  8. A 5”x7” (or larger) enlargement.
  9. Computer enhanced photo, 5×7, explanation on attached 3×5 card, include original photo. (optional face-to-face judging – see rule 12)

Department J-20, Class C Mastering Photography – Open to exhibitors grades 9 and above.

  1. Animal photos, 3 photos, black and white or colored.
  2. Night photography, 5×7.
  3. A story sequence of 5 pictures on any subject, colored.
  4. Portrait Sitting, consisting of 3 different poses, black & white or colored.
  5. A 5”x7” (or larger) enlargement.
  6. Extreme close up, colored, 5”x7” or larger (within 12 inches).
  7. Flowers, 3 photos, colored.
  8. Composed lifeless grouping of objects such as fruit (no buildings).
  9. Computer enhanced photo, 5×7, explanation on attached 3×5 card, include original photo. (optional face-to-face judging – see rule 12)
